Peckham Boy

Looking through old photos I found this portrait which i took outside a pub in Peckham. I was photographing the area for 'London Loop' the transport for London magazine. I mainly had to photograph shop fronts and various 'landmarks'. Not the the most exciting of commissions so when I spotted this man with an incredible face, I could not help myself and approached him. While he gave me a detailed summery of the history of Peckham I took this picture. I remember that he really made my day!

Botton Village

Danby dale is one of a clutch of little valleys probing southwards from the River Esk into the bulk of the North York Moors. It has been a secluded haven and port of call for many groups of people over the years. The monks of Rosadale traversed it on their way to Whitby Abbey and, in later years, Quaker families settled here, away from the suspicion and heckling of the towns. They drained the land and welled the pasture, and a ribbon of farms appeared along both sides of the dales.
Today, these fields and houses are worked and lived in by another special community of people: Botton Village, half of whose inhabitants bear some form of mental handicap.Traditionally,they are seen as people who are impaired, functionally limited and unable to do things. I am amazed by the strong relationships which are formed and the confidence of many of the villagers. This environment gives them a strong sense of purpose in life.
Since Botton's small beginnings, many more people with special needs have come to join, and adjoining farms have been acquired as they fell vacant. Each of these farms has become a focal point of the neibourhood development- new dwellings and workshops have sprung up around each other, and the village now comprises around 400 people. Everyone works: on the farm and gardens, or producing candles, wooden toys, woven goods, bread, dairy products or on the vital tasks of cooking, cleaning and mending. In short, providing for each other's needs and fulfilling the demands of the wider world for its unique products.

It was by chance that at the age of 14 I came across a book by the
photographer Jane Bown. From that point on photography became
something totally magnetic and all absorbing for me. Her method of
working discreetly and simply, using only natural light deeply
inspired me. It fueled what has become, thanks to her example, a deep
passion for photography.
This picture was taken by my current tutor at a press conference in
1989. Whilst all the press photographed from the press penn , Jane
climbed on stage to get a better picture, much to the amusement of
everyone present including the subjects,Arthur Miller, the late Bob
Peck and Helen Mirren. I think its brilliant as it is very rare to
come across images of Jane at work. It has never been published, you
saw it here first!
